These buildings could accommodate tens to perhaps a hundred people in larger structures. Rabbis regularly taught in homes, with students sitting at their feet - a culturally expected practice in the Pharisaic world where Jesus primarily operated.
The Nature of Faith
The text explicitly states that Jesus saw “their faith” - referring to the four friends who carried the paralytic, not the paralytic himself. This reveals that faith is not merely internal belief but visible, demonstrable action. The friends’ determination to dig through the roof (a hours-long project involving mud, branches, and tiles) made their faith observable. This challenges Western individualistic concepts of faith.
Miracles as Teaching Tools
The hosts emphasize that miraculous healing was not Jesus’s primary mission but rather a pedagogical device. Healing is inherently problematic - once Jesus heals one person, what about everyone else with similar conditions? The healings served to illustrate and reinforce the specific teaching point Jesus was making in that moment. Son of Man: A Dual Meaning
The phrase “Son of Man” (Hebrew: ben adam) carries two distinct possibilities:

Simple humanity: In Ezekiel, God calls the prophet “son of man” simply meaning “you’re just a human being.” Jesus sometimes uses it this way to emphasize his full humanity.

Daniel’s apocalyptic figure: In Daniel 7, “one like a son of man” comes in the clouds before the Ancient of Days to establish justice. First-century Jewish sages interpreted this as ben adam (son of Adam) - suggesting Abel, the first person to suffer unjustly for doing right, would return to render justice for all who suffered similarly.
Jesus’s usage in this story deliberately invokes the second meaning, but with a shocking twist.
The Radical Forgiveness of Abel
The rabbinical expectation was that when the “Son of Man” returned, he would exact justice and judgment - Abel would look at Cain and declare his punishment. Jesus revolutionary claims that the Son of Man comes instead with authority to forgive sins on earth. According to Marty’s teacher Ray, this is “the only time in Jewish history where anybody has had the audacity to suggest that when Abel comes back, he’s going to look at Cain, he’s going to look him in the eyeballs, and he’s going to say, ‘I forgive you,’ rather than, ‘Here’s what you got coming.’”
This reframes the entire messianic mission from vengeance to restoration.
Blasphemy and Divine Authority
The Pharisees correctly identify that only God can forgive sins - not interpersonal forgiveness, but the cosmic forgiveness Jesus pronounces. Jesus doesn’t dispute this claim but rather demonstrates his divine authority by healing the paralytic, proving he has been “sent by God” and indeed has the authority he claims.
Remez: The Art of Biblical Hinting
A remez is a deliberate quotation of Scripture designed to link the listener back to the broader context of that passage. When Jesus quotes Hosea 6:6 (“I desire mercy, not sacrifice”), he’s not just citing a single verse but invoking the entire context of Hosea’s condemnation. The Pharisees, who had memorized the entire Torah, would immediately recall the surrounding passages about Israel’s disobedience, empty religious practice, and God’s call to justice and mercy.
P’shat, Remez, and Drash
Jewish hermeneutics operates on multiple levels:
- P’shat: The surface-level, plain meaning of the text
- Remez: The hint or allusion that points to deeper scriptural connections
- Drash: The deeper truth or treasure buried in the story
Critically, the drash never contradicts the p’shat - it only deepens, widens, and enriches the surface meaning with fuller color and profundity.
The Mamzer Agenda
Throughout these stories, Matthew’s Gospel emphasizes the mamzer (outsider, illegitimate one). Matthew himself was a tax collector - definitively an outsider. When Jesus calls him and Matthew throws a dinner party, he invites all his tax collector and sinner friends. Sharing a meal signifies right relationship and acceptance. Jesus’s willingness to eat with outsiders demonstrates that God’s mission has always been to bless all nations, not just maintain religious purity among insiders.
New Wine and New Wineskins
Jesus’s teaching about not putting new wine in old wineskins operates on multiple levels:
- P’shat level: You cannot force new ideas into old, rigid worldviews. People satisfied with their current religious system won’t be open to transformation.
- Remez level: References to garments, wineskins, and bridegrooms appear in Jeremiah 13-17, connecting to warnings about destruction and the need for genuine rather than false piety.
The hosts note that BEMA itself works like new wine - refreshing for those seeking something more, but rejected by those content with old systems.
Mercy Over Sacrifice
The Hosea 6:6 quotation critiques empty religious observance divorced from justice and compassion. God’s mission from Abraham onward has been to bless all nations. Israel’s placement at the geographic crossroads was intentional - they were meant to show the world God’s love, compassion, mercy, and forgiveness. Instead, religious leaders focused on piety and sacrifice while neglecting the outsider.
Jesus fulfills the prophets by restoring outsiders to right relationship. Those who ignore the mamzer abolish the law and prophets, even if well-intentioned.
Examples & Applications
The Paralytic’s Friends
The four friends demonstrate visible, actionable faith by their extreme determination. They don’t accept “the house is full” as a final answer. They problem-solve, climb the roof, spend hours digging through construction materials, and lower their friend to Jesus. This illustrates that faith is not passive belief but active persistence in pursuing wholeness and restoration.
Modern application: How do we demonstrate visible faith on behalf of others? Are we willing to go to uncomfortable, inconvenient, or even socially awkward lengths to bring people to Jesus?
Matthew’s Dinner Party
When Matthew receives a second chance from Jesus, his immediate response is to invite all his outsider friends to meet the rabbi. This demonstrates the natural response to experiencing grace - sharing it with others who need it. Matthew doesn’t keep his new relationship with Jesus private or exclusive.
Modern application: When we experience transformation, do we instinctively invite other “outsiders” into that same experience? Or do we create insider/outsider dynamics even within Christian community?
The Pharisees’ Critique
The religious leaders question why Jesus eats with tax collectors and sinners. Their concern reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of God’s mission. They see ritual purity and separation as the goal, missing that God desires mercy, compassion, and the restoration of outsiders.
Modern application: How do contemporary Christian communities create similar barriers? Do we emphasize doctrinal purity, moral behavior, or church attendance while neglecting the radical welcome and restoration Jesus modeled?
The Fasting Question
John the Baptist’s disciples ask why Jesus’s disciples don’t fast. Jesus responds that you don’t fast at a wedding party while the bridegroom is present. But he also hints at coming destruction - not for the Romans, but for Jerusalem itself.
Modern application: Are we able to discern the appropriate spiritual posture for our current moment? Sometimes celebration is appropriate; sometimes lament and fasting are needed.
New Wine in Old Wineskins
Some people enthusiastically receive BEMA’s teaching because their old framework wasn’t working - they were yearning for something more. Others reject it entirely because their current system satisfies them. This isn’t about intelligence or sincerity, but about readiness for transformation.
Modern application: Are we humble enough to admit when our current understanding isn’t working? Can we hold our theological frameworks with open hands, willing to expand or even replace them when we encounter new insights from Scripture?

If we are not looking out for the outsider, we are missing the entire point of the biblical narrative - regardless of how doctrinally pure or morally upright we consider ourselves.

- There would have been a very large number of people in this house hearing him teach.
- It would have taken HOURS for the men to dig through the roof.
- What’s the purpose for healing and what is its significance?
- It shouldn’t be a surprise that rabbi’s heal people. Elijah, Elisha, etc. There have been many people who have performed miracles and Jesus isn’t “special” in that regard.
- While Jesus would heal people out of compassion from time to time, healing, generally, was part of teaching.
- Jesus FORGIVES the man before he heals the man.
- Jesus forgives the man BECAUSE HE SAW THEIR FAITH.

- Mark explains a little extra to his Greco-Roman audience WHY they believe he’s blaspheming which the other Gospel writers do not include (different agendas).
- Why did they think he was blaspheming? Because he was claiming to be able to forgive when they believed that ONLY GOD was able to do that.
- This forgiveness is not interpersonal forgiveness, I wronged you so please forgive me. This is bigger than that.
- The Sermon on the Mount’s main point is that we’re engaging in the work of forgiveness which is something that the Amidah Prayer (the Standing Prayer) did not ever have.
