Their fruit revealed the problem: they pushed sinners away rather than showing compassion, demonstrating a lack of love, joy, and gentleness despite their external correctness.
The Threefold Teaching of the Kingdom (Matthew 7:21-23)
Jewish thought developed a threefold understanding of how Kingdom comes, possibly predating Jesus or perhaps originating with Jesus himself. Either way, all three elements appear in Jesus’s teaching.
The theology traces back to Exodus and the formation of Israel. At Mount Sinai, God declared that if Israel would enter covenant with Him, they would become “a kingdom of priests.” The rabbis analyzed this story and identified three essential components:
1. The Finger of God Moves
This represents God’s active intervention and initiative. In Exodus, this occurred through the plagues, the Passover, the exodus from Egypt, and the parting of the Red Sea. God demonstrated His power and rescued His people.
Jesus references this explicitly in another teaching: “If I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the Kingdom of God has come among you” (Luke 11:20). For Christian theology, we can point to the cross and empty tomb as the ultimate movement of God’s finger, though God’s activity continues throughout all time. This is a “has happened and always happening” reality.
2. People Call Him Lord
At the Red Sea, for the first time in the biblical narrative, the Israelites actually called upon God’s holy name (the Tetragrammaton, YHWH). Previously they had merely cried out generally, but now they specifically acknowledged Him as LORD.
This represents recognition and acknowledgment of God’s kingship. It is not about empire or Christendom imperialism but simply recognizing who the King is. The analogy was given of a French king who technically held the throne but had no subjects who acknowledged his rule - therefore his kingdom was never really a kingdom.
3. People Respond in Obedience
At Mount Sinai, God gave the Law (Torah) and said the people would be His kingdom “if” they agreed to follow His commands. Kingdom comes when people actually do the will of the Father, not merely profess allegiance.
Jesus emphasizes this in Matthew 7:21: “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Many will claim to have prophesied, driven out demons, and performed miracles in Jesus’s name, yet Jesus will say “I never knew you” because the obedience component was missing.
The Protestant Problem
Protestant Christianity tends to emphasize two of these three elements well. Protestants recognize that salvation is “all of God” (whether from a Calvinist or Arminian perspective) and emphasize confession - calling Jesus “Lord.” However, Protestantism often struggles with the obedience component because of fears about “works-based religion” or “merit-based salvation.” Luther even wanted to remove the Book of James from the canon because of its emphasis on works.
When obedience is missing, Kingdom cannot fully manifest. This may explain why Protestant Christianity has sometimes failed to demonstrate Kingdom reality despite correct theology about grace and confession.
The Non-Christian Friend Problem
On the flip side, many people know individuals who would never claim to be Christians yet demonstrate extraordinary generosity, love, and Christ-like character. These people seem to have “more Jesus oozing out of their bones” than many professing Christians.
In the threefold formula, God has moved in their lives (element 1) and they demonstrate obedience to Kingdom principles (element 3), but they lack the recognition piece - calling Jesus “Lord” (element 2). Therefore, Kingdom is not fully present in their experience either.
Order and Relationship to Salvation
The three elements do not need to occur in linear order (1-2-3). It is not a Western sequential process. God’s finger has already moved and continues to move, so element one is always present. The question is whether we will do our part with elements two and three.
Critically, this is Kingdom theology, not salvation theology. The rabbis were not discussing how to get into heaven but rather how Kingdom manifests in the world. While related to salvation, these are distinct concepts. The Protestant audience should not hear this as “you must have obedience to be saved” but rather as “Kingdom appears when all three elements are present.”
Chiastic Structure of the Sermon on the Mount
The episode references several parallel elements between the beginning and end of the sermon:

The traditional interpretation of this parable suggests an obvious choice between wisdom and foolishness - who would be dumb enough to build on sand? However, the cultural context reveals greater complexity.
The “sand” is not beach sand but the sediment at the bottom of a wadi - a desert ravine that remains dry most of the year but floods violently during rare rainstorms. The “rock” is bedrock or cliff face above the wadi.
Both the fool and the wise person hear Jesus’s words. The difference is in response: the wise person “puts them into practice” while the foolish person “does not put them into practice.” This is not about construction materials but about location and lifestyle choices.
Here is the crucial insight: Given how revolutionary, backwards, and counterintuitive Jesus’s teaching is, building one’s life on his interpretation of Torah is not the “obvious easy choice.” Jesus had to preface the sermon by saying “Don’t think I’ve come to abolish the law” precisely because his radical emphasis on love, internal heart transformation, and inclusion of outsiders seemed to contradict Torah.
The person who builds on the cliff face is choosing to trust Jesus’s radical reinterpretation despite cultural pressure and apparent foolishness. The person who builds in the wadi may seem to be making the “safe conventional choice” by following traditional religious interpretations, but destruction is inevitable because that is not how God designed the world to function.
The flooding wadi represents the certain consequences that will come - perhaps not today or tomorrow or even this year, but eventually. Living contrary to Kingdom principles will fail. Living according to Jesus’s teaching, though difficult and requiring “narrow gate intention,” will withstand the storms.
Jesus concludes by essentially saying: “Trust me. This is what the Torah was always meant to do. This is what the story has been about from the beginning.” For BEMA’s methodology, this means everything studied in the Old Testament (particularly Genesis and Exodus) must line up with Jesus’s teaching. There is no “part A/part B” where God changed his mind between testaments. It is one continuous story from front to back.
S’micha - Teaching with Authority (Matthew 7:28-29)
The crowds were amazed because Jesus taught “as one who had authority, not as their teachers of the law.” The Hebrew word is s’micha, which refers to a rabbi’s authority to reinterpret Torah.
Typically, rabbis gained this authority through ordination by a recognized teacher after years of study. They would quote previous authorities and build their interpretations on established tradition. Jesus, however, taught with s’micha despite having no apparent rabbinic pedigree (“Who’s his rabbi?”).
The amazement comes from Jesus’s audacity to reinterpret Torah so radically - to essentially say “You have heard it said… but I say to you” throughout the sermon. This requires remarkable authority. Jesus is claiming to see the Bible more purely, clearly, succinctly, and accurately than any rabbi before or after him.
For Christian believers, this is the foundation for trusting Jesus’s interpretation above all others. His authority is not derived from human tradition but from his unique identity and insight into God’s original intent for Torah.
Examples & Applications
The Highway Interchange Analogy
Marty uses a specific example from the Tri-Cities area in Washington State (Pasco, Richland, Kennewick). There is an interchange where drivers coming from the north must merge from a left-side on-ramp, cross four or five lanes of traffic in less than a quarter mile, and exit on the right side.
First-time drivers typically miss this exit because the maneuver seems impossible or they do not understand the directions. Even experienced drivers must approach it with resolute intention - checking blind spots, signaling clearly, making successive lane changes with focus and determination.
This perfectly illustrates the “narrow gate” principle. Living out the Kingdom of God requires this same intentional focus. We will not stumble into Kingdom living accidentally any more than we would accidentally navigate that complex interchange. The wide road is easy because it requires no special effort - we simply go with the flow of traffic. The narrow road requires constant attention and deliberate choices.
The Fruit of Pharisaical Teaching
The Pharisees provide a historical example of teachers who had correct orthodoxy but failed the fruit test. They said the right things and externally performed the right actions. Their doctrine was largely accurate.
However, the fruit of their teaching and practice was problematic. They pushed sinners away rather than welcoming them. They created heavy burdens for people rather than demonstrating compassion. They lacked love, joy, and gentleness despite their external correctness.
Jesus later tells his disciples: “Be careful to do what the Pharisees say, but do not do what they do.” Follow their correct teaching but do not imitate their heartless application of it. This illustrates that orthodoxy without orthopraxy fails the test.
The Protestant Obedience Gap
Protestant Christianity provides an example of missing one element of the threefold Kingdom teaching. Protestants excel at recognizing God’s initiative (salvation is all of God) and emphasizing confession (calling Jesus “Lord”). These two elements receive extensive teaching and emphasis.
However, the obedience component often gets minimized or excluded due to fears about works-righteousness. Any discussion of obedience risks accusations of promoting a merit-based salvation system, so Protestants tend to avoid the topic.

The Generous Non-Christian Friend
Many Christians know non-religious people who demonstrate remarkable Christ-like character - generosity, compassion, integrity, service. These individuals often seem to embody Jesus’s teachings better than many church members.
In the threefold formula, God has clearly moved in their lives (they demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit even without religious language for it). They live in obedience to Kingdom principles (loving neighbors, pursuing justice, practicing generosity). What is missing is the explicit recognition and acknowledgment of Jesus as Lord.
This example challenges simplistic categories about who is “in” and who is “out” while still maintaining that all three elements are necessary for Kingdom to fully manifest.
Building in the Wadi
Imagine someone in first-century Israel looking at available building sites. The wadi bottom looks attractive - flat, accessible, protected from wind, easy to build on. The cliff face is harder to access, more exposed, requires more effort to build on.
For eleven months of the year, the wadi dweller congratulates himself on his wise choice. His house is comfortable and convenient. The cliff dweller looks foolish for choosing such a difficult location.
Then the rainy season comes. The wadi floods violently, destroying everything in its path. The cliff dweller, though he endured more difficulty in construction, remains safe.
Similarly, living by conventional religious wisdom may seem easier and more comfortable for years. But Jesus warns that destruction is inevitable because that is not how God designed the world to work. Living by Kingdom principles may be harder and invite criticism, but it is built on reality rather than cultural assumptions.

Deuteronomy’s Life and Death Themes
Jesus references the concept of choosing between life and death from Deuteronomy. A deeper study of how Moses frames covenant obedience as choosing life would illuminate Jesus’s teaching.
