What You Look For, You Will Find

Marty shares a principle from one of his favorite teachers: “What you look for, you will find.”

  • If we look for the world being corrupt and falling apart, we will find it
  • If we look for broken places and disharmony, there are plenty of examples
  • If we look for everything wrong and all the ways people mess up, failure abounds

  • If we stay attentive to the work of God in people who don’t wear the T-shirts
  • We might find God more than ever

The challenge: Are there “signs of Jonah” all over our world that we’re missing because we’re looking for the wrong things?

Darkness and Light: Transformation Through Addition, Not Subtraction

In the teaching about the unclean spirit returning with seven others (Matthew 12:43-45), Jesus illustrates a profound principle about spiritual transformation:

The Problem with Subtraction: Darkness is not a thing - it’s the absence of light. You cannot physically grab darkness and remove it. Similarly, evil and brokenness in our lives cannot simply be expelled through willpower and effort.

The Solution Through Addition: The only way to get rid of darkness is to turn on the light. The only way to overcome evil in our lives is to fill the void with the good things we were created to do.

Jesus criticizes the Pharisees: “You’re working so hard to expel what’s wrong, to push out evil, to get rid of the evil spirit. The problem is you’re not working hard at putting anything good in its place. Where’s the goodness? Where’s the compassion? Where’s the justice?”

Practical Application: Marty shares personally about struggling with pornography addiction: “We can work so hard to get rid of a thing and it never actually works. We spend all of our energy trying to not engage porn… That porn addiction is the absence of the thing that you were created to do. The porn addiction isn’t actually a thing. You can’t get rid of it. You can only do the thing you were made to do.”

The breakthrough came not through fighting the addiction but through discovering and pursuing his calling - memorizing and studying the Text with passion. When he filled his life with what he was made to do, the addiction lost its power.

Redefining Family: Biology vs. Doing the Will of the Father

When Jesus’s mother and brothers come wanting to speak to Him, Jesus makes a radical statement:

“Who is my mother, and who are my brothers? Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

The Family Rift: Marty suggests there was genuine tension in Jesus’s family. Mary, despite treasuring everything about Jesus’s miraculous birth in her heart, was still human with limited perspective. She may have expected Jesus to be something different than what He became. His family stands outside, not sitting at His feet - they want Him to come out to them, not willing to engage with what He’s doing inside.

The Tension: This creates a difficult paradox, especially for college-age students:

  • The commandment to honor father and mother remains
  • Jesus never broke this commandment and honored Mary and Joseph
  • Yet there comes a moment where obedience to God’s calling may conflict with family expectations

The Resolution: Jesus isn’t giving license to disrespect parents or abandon family. Rather, He’s establishing priority: “I’m not going to miss out on the thing that God is doing in God’s household (beit av) just to keep this other beit av happy.”

The key is honoring and respecting biological family while not forsaking the truer, deeper family created by doing the will of the Father. It’s a tension to manage with grace, not a binary choice.

Notably, the family eventually comes around - it will be Mary at the foot of the cross, and Jesus with John saying, “Behold, your mother, and woman, behold your son.” One of Jesus’s last acts was healing the rift in His family.

Recognizing Good Fruit in Unexpected Places

The Challenge: Many Christians are taught that non-believers cannot truly do good - that when they’re happy, they’re not really happy; when they’re patient, it’s really selfishness; whatever good you see is actually bad because good can only come from believers.

Jesus’s Teaching: This runs contrary to everything Jesus teaches. When you see good fruit - genuine love, justice, compassion, healing, freedom - it’s God at work. The sign of Jonah is all around us.

Application:

  • Look for the Kingdom of God in people who don’t wear Christian T-shirts
  • Recognize and celebrate good fruit wherever it appears
  • Be surprised by where God is working
  • Don’t dismiss obvious good just because it comes from an unexpected source
Fighting Addiction Through Calling, Not Willpower

The Problem: Spending enormous energy trying to “not engage” something - whether pornography, substance abuse, negative thought patterns, or other struggles. This approach focuses on subtraction (removing the bad) rather than addition (adding the good).

The Principle: The addiction or struggle is the absence of the thing you were created to do. It cannot be expelled directly; it can only be displaced by filling your life with your God-given purpose.

Practical Steps:

  1. Identify what you were made to do - your calling, passion, purpose
  2. Pursue that calling with intentionality and energy
  3. Fill your time and attention with productive, life-giving activities
  4. Allow the good to displace the bad naturally

Marty’s Example: After returning from Israel and Turkey with a fire to study Scripture, spending 3-4 hours daily memorizing and studying the Text, he found that his pornography addiction simply lost its grip. He didn’t fight it directly; he filled his life with something better.

Asking for Signs of What’s Already Happening

The Pharisees’ Error: They demanded signs while God’s work was happening all around them. Gentiles were responding to the Kingdom message, fulfilling prophetic expectations, and they were missing it entirely.

Modern Application: How often do we:

  • Pray for God to move while ignoring where He’s already moving?
  • Ask for signs of revival while dismissing spiritual hunger in unexpected places?
  • Wait for God to show up while He’s already present in the margins?
  • Look for “biblical” manifestations while missing the Kingdom in front of us?

The Invitation: Pay attention to where people are responding to truth, goodness, justice, and love - even if they don’t use our language or fit our expectations. That might be the sign of Jonah.

Managing Family Tension with Grace

The Reality: Many people face moments where their calling from God creates tension with family expectations. This might involve:

  • Career choices that family doesn’t understand
  • Ministry direction that disappoints parental hopes
  • Theological evolution that concerns relatives
  • Life decisions that break family patterns

The Balance:

  1. Honor and respect family genuinely (this is non-negotiable)
  2. Don’t forsake the calling God has placed on your life
  3. Communicate clearly and compassionately
